Dia De Los Muertos in Fruitvale

Description: No one celebrates Dia De Los Muertos like the Fruitvale district! Every year the streets just behind the Oscar Grant (Fruitvale) Bart station turn into a colorful festival of music, food, performers, and the most intriguing altars you will see. There is so much to see  and do everywhere you look. There is a kids zone with legit kids rides and games. They have rows upon rows upon rows of vendors selling their unique crafts and wares. Everywhere we turned there was beautifully erected altars honoring those who have passed on. My daughter got her face painted like a calavera (sugar skulls) and she also was blessed by a woman bearing sage. A main stage in the Bart parking lot has musicians playing all day. My littlest daughter was more than happy to just watch the sights and dance her little heart out. The food was so yummy that we picked up- my husband stuffed down a few tacos while me and my daughters feasted on dressed up corn on the cob. One of the best things is that this event is so close to public transportation (literally in the Bart parking lot) it makes getting to and from the event really easy without the hassle of having to look for parking.

Highlights: The Kids Zone is always a plus at any event and the rides were good ones as well. The face painting was free but we left a tip, so that was nice.

Tips: Take Bart, you are literally at the finger tips of Bart so why not save yourself the car ride and take Bart. Also get there early, with so much to see and do you will want to make sure you have plenty of time to explore.
